Michael Phelps: One-Time Mistake or a Bad Olympic Seed?

Thursday, February 5th, 2009

So if you missed David Letterman’s Top Ten list of Michael Phelps excuses for his marijuana mishap — my favorite, #3. Chillax, Brosef.” — or haven’t watched a news broadcast on any station from CBS to Sports Center, you might not know about the swimming sensation’s most recent scandal.

A picture surfaced of Michael Phelps smoking a bong at a college party. While it’s true that Phelps has not lived up to his Olympian image and has surely let lots of people, friends, family and fans alike, down, is this being blown out of proportion? Eight-time Olympic gold medalist or not, he’s 23 years old. Not that that excuses his behavior, not that that means all 23 year olds behave in the same manor. But can’t this incident be chalked up to being young and immature?

But how many incidents can we chalk up to immaturity in Phelps’ case? He’s starting to grow quite the collection — bong-smoking in ‘08, a DUI in ‘04, and an anonymous source close to Ms. Informed revealed that when Phelps was making a commercial for this company’s line of personal and business use jets, “he also trashed one of our planes with his friends.”

Young and immature, or an all-around rotten apple? You decide.

Simpson Calls a Time Out from Romo

Wednesday, May 14th, 2008

TMZ.com is reporting that despite rumors of an engagement, Tony Romo and Jessica Simpson have split. While there is no confirmation from either stars’ reps and several sources are saying there is no truth to this rumor, TMZ is usually on the ball with these things…we’ll see.

Other Simpson rumors circulating include a possible weekend wedding for Ashlee and Pete.

Jealous Jess Races Ash to Altar

Tuesday, May 6th, 2008

A faithful reader requested the latest, most up-to-date goings-on in the life of Ms. Jessica Simpson, so without further adue…

Not long after the engagement of her sister Ashlee to FOB lead man Pete Wentz, rumors are flying that Jessica Simpson and her very own romeo Tony Romo will be engaged any day now. Rumors spurred when Simpson’s friends were toasting her “happiness” at a party thrown by P. Diddy last week.

Sources say she wants to beat her little sis down the aisle, and desparate times call for desparate measures. Simpson will do anything to beat Ashlee to the alter and has considered proposing to Romo herself or pulling a “Britney” — getting Romo drunk and going to Vegas.

Simpson says she feels better matched with Romo than with any of her ex-flames including ex-husband Nick Lachey and ex-boyfriend John Mayer. According to Simpson, there was always a rivalry between her and Lachey, and Mayer was too intellectual for her.

A jock is just about on par with Simpson’s level of intellect, I’d say.

Man(ning) and Wife

Sunday, April 20th, 2008

After winning the Super Bowl ring in February, Eli Manning now has another ring to put on his finger — a wedding ring. The Giants’ quarterback, 27, tied the knot with his college girlfriend Abbey McGrew, 24, in Cabos San Lucas, Mexico on Saturday. About 60 family members and close friends, including Manning’s older brother Peyton, attended the intimate ceremony. A
reception on the beach followed.

Hot Mess of the Week
2/9/08

Saturday, February 9th, 2008

p7e.jpgThis week’s Hot Mess of the Week goes to Patriots coach Bill Belichick.

When his team, defeated by the New York Giants last Sunday at the 42nd Superbowl (effectively putting an end to their almost-perfect season), had to stay out on the field for the final second of the game, Belichick headed for the locker room. Sore loser, Superbowl loser, whatever he is, Belichick abandoned his team at their not-so-finest hour second.

So while he might not have won another Superbowl or a fourth Superbowl ring, he did win Ms. Informed’s Hot Mess of the Week award.  That’s gotta count for something, right?

The Year of the Mets

While it’s not entirely official YET, the New York Mets have practically acquired two-time Cy Young winner Johan Santana for their 2008-2009 season, and quite possibly a few more after that.

With this stellar addition to the team (third baseman David Wright referred to him as “arguably the best pitcher in the game”), the Mets have as good a chance as any to win it all this season.

While the 72-hour window for the Mets to sign Santana to a contract extension is now open, the trade will become official after an agreement is reached and Santana passes a physical.

LET’S GO METS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hott Mess of the Week
for 1/19/08

cowboys.jpg

This week has been relatively quiet in the world of Hott Messes (read: Britney Spears must have been staying inside a lot this week), so the Hott Mess candidates are kinda sparse, but this week’s award goes to the Dallas Cowboys’ little girl receiver, Terrell Owens.

While everyone knows there’s no crying in baseball, apparently the same can’t be said for football, as #81 tearfully defended Tony Romo’s performance after Sunday’s game against the Giants, sniffling that it was unfair to point fingers at Romo for the team’s loss. Somebody, quick, call the waaaahmbulence.

Who does he think he is, Hillary Clinton? At least she won.
